Shit My Dad Says CBS Slammed By Parents Television Council – CBS recently announced a new show that will be based on the popular social networking service Twitter. The series, titled “$#*! My Dad Says,” has recently landed the network in hot water with the Parents Television Council, who does not approve of the announcement by CBS. The group has assisted the Federal Trade Commission in cracking down on the profanity and nudity that has been featured more frequently on television in recent years. They stated, that in response to the new CBS show, they would be “waging an unrelenting campaign” against the advertisers who take part in the show. They also said that they would be challenging the license of every affiliate that airs the show.

The show is scheduled to start on Thursday nights at 8:30.
“CBS intentionally chose to insert an expletive into the actual name of the show, despite its claim that the world will be bleeped, it is just CBS latest demonstration of its contempt for families and the public,” said the President of PTC, Tim Winter.
The organization also stated that they would be amending their court filings on a number of cases to argue that CBS attempted to make a point through the naming of their most recent show. They said that CBS announced the show on the same day that it would eventually go on to file a brief in the Janet Jackson Superbowl incident case.

“The program is inspired by the wildly popular Twitter phenomenon, which now has more than 1.5 million followers and also has spawned a best-selling book of the same name,” said CBS in their statement. “It will in no way be indecent and will adhere to all CBS standards. Parents who choose to do so will find the show can easily be blocked using their V-Chip.”

The PTC would be a lot more credible on this issue if they had a reputation for acting according to the evidence. For example on nudity their approach is completely counter-productive and results in widespread and often serious harm. It is not coincidence that the USA has a media which is one of the most heavily censored for nudity in the western world and also much the highest rates of teenage abortion, pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Are they really trying to further the welfare of children and families or is it personal prejudice?

PTC, if you want credibility, then look at the international comparisons and then think long and hard about the attitudes which make such enormous differences. Most prudery is child abuse with good intentions and ignorance is not an excuse.
