Forget “breaking” barriers of race and ethnicity, but Aaron should not have won. I am an African American and I think this was a political move on FN’s part to have a person of color win, because it was so very obvious that Lisa and Adam were far more talented. It’s a shame, because talent (talent OVERALL) did not win out this time around… Shame on your Food Network for succumbing to polictical and media pressure.

But everytime a BLACK person wins something it has to be because of “affirmative action.” Whatever you people have to tell yourselves to mask your insecurities…..may God help you for being so shallow!!!! Shame on you!!!! Why cant you except the fact that African Americans worked there way up from slavery and are consistantly trying to better themselves!!! Im so disgusted right now. And please….spend more time improving your own life and quit hating on others for being successful and that goes for ALL races!!!!!

I agree, Muffin. You stated it so precisely! Haters!!
I am African-American also, I did not think Aaron should have won, simply because I think he was the weakest of the three and the least appealing. On the other hand, The Neelys are tops in appeal and talent in my opinion! They are black, by the way.
Aaron is the 1st black winner. The others were white! I don’t see what the haters are whining about.
sue | Jul 28, 2008 | Reply
Muffin you are exactly correct. No race is superior. But as long as you keep the “African” before the “American” you do expect to be treated better. When 70% of the population is born to unwed mothers you can hardly say that your consistantly trying to improve your lives. Even with a black man running for president and more then likely going to win you people still aren’t happy. I think it is you that needs to get a life and stop looking for a handout.

I MYSELF THOUGHT THE BEST MAN DID WIN!

I thought all three were great. I guess that Aaron would win somewhere in the middle of show…was it race? It was interesting that beyond the initial conversation the judges had at the end, they were not seen actually making a decision. They chose Aaron because in the mix of things, he will be a great choice. While we look at it from our own prism of prejudices, the fact is, he will fill a niche. And The Food Network, like everybody needs to mix it up. So they did.

I think Aaron is talented and looks to be a sweet man and deserves his own show but he was given his show over the two better contestants. Please don’t associate me with the hateful posters- I liked him and wish him well. But even he said something was missing from his promo and it was. People laughed but not at things he meant to be funny and he was still nervous in front of the camera and even though his food sounded and looked good I wouldn’t be able to cook it from what he said. Not so with Adam and Lisa’s promos. Something is not right about what happened. I don’t blame Aaron though.

not that it matters because arging with ingnorance is silly…i just want to clear up a few things….i never said that aaron worked his way up from slavery…i said that black people did…and sue, ur exactly right….none of the children in your race are born to unwed mothers and im sure ur race is perfect…as a matter of fact, i never said mine was either. and as far as obama goes he was raised by his WHITE mother….so….you people who? blacks or whites? cause from what i can see….some people on both sides are happy and unhappy….maybe im not the only one who needs to do my research, wouldnt u say chris? and as for you mr. kkk supporter…im well aware of the fact aaron was born free…however, with u being quite the history expert, im sure u r aware of a part of our past.. specifically between 1654-1865 when slavery was legal, those blacks, our ancestors, did have to work their way up…and yes lets blame 211 years of slavery in america on africans in africa…. anyway…if u dont like aaron then dont watch his show….out of all the challenges….he did bad on one!!! no contestant was perfect during the entire show!!! who was really looking for a handout?
sue | Jul 29, 2008 | Reply
this is good discussing this subject to clear the air on what people really think.Ofcourse there are white people that have children out of wedlock. I think the percentage is around 20% out of about 89% of the population versus 70% out of 12% of the population, can you see the difference. There are also whites that we label “white trash”…I don’t think any race of people are perfect and I hate no one. I think what white people are mad at is this…and please anyone out there correct me if I have this wrong. I don’t care if the network gave Aaron his own show, they see something special in him and I’m sure there are people that will love watching him. The problem is that he was in a “contest” to pick the best person to get their own show. He was not the best and they (the show’s judges) did everything they could to give the prize to him over more qualified people. Isn’t that was affirmative action is all about. Taking a minority who isn’t as qualified as someone else and giving them a position that they normally would not have the opportunity to have. You can’t do that in a contest. It’s just not fair to the other people. It’s like when Michelle Obama admitted that she did’nt have the grades to get into Princeton but she was admitted because of her minority status, hense taking a spot in class away from another student who was more qualifed to attend an Ivy League school. After 50 years of this practice I don’t think it’s neccesary anymore. Your people are going to have to stand on your own merits one of these days. You can’t always expect to go to the front of the line. Look at all the white people that never get to go to college. I don’t think that they feel entitled to do so. But the thing we hate the most is that in the case of Michelle getting into the finest Univeristy in the country. Did she say “Thank you Princeton for giving me this wonderful opportunity to better myself”. No, she said “I never felt like a student at Princeton, I always felt like a black student”. Some gratitude….that’s what were all mad about. It appears that you feel entitled to things without actually working for it. You (not you personally)expect the big house, the fancy car, the good jobs and the Ivy League degree just given to you because your black and you’ve been picked on for 300 years. I just don’t think it works that way. Your thoughts please……

Aron only won because he is black! He can cook but that’s it! That dude from Philly was 10 times better. You can even tell that they edited it when Aron was cooking, the laugh track was real loud and they were cutting to people juming up and down, way over the top.
Plus the netwark is going way to minorities. With the Nealy’s (but they’re good) then you got the new black racheal ray, she even has her same anoying laugh.

I hope everything works out for Aron with the new show but I will not be watching. To me he just is not enjoyable to watch and I hate his voice and so does my husband. He has a very nasal way of speaking that grates on our nerves. Adam should have won. He was much more likeable to viewers and so was his food. I did not like Lisa or the type of food she prepared. I understand this is a great opportunity for Aron and his family and I wish him the very best. Like the majority I think he won because of his color. I also think Bobby Flay was really pulling for him after Kelsey got eliminated. Bobb seemed to really dislike Adam.

Sue,
First, I love the way you said “picked on” like it was just a bit of teasing and name calling…maybe it doesnt mean much to you cause it wasnt ur people, or maybe because it wasnt your grandmother telling stories of the old days when she and her friends were beaten, killed and mistreated because they were born another color…or maybe its because u didnt hear your mother tell you about her brave father who was killed for standing up for himself and his race…maybe thats why its just “teasing.” But anyway, with that being said, i cant honestly say i disagree with all of your comments. I myself got all of my degrees from HBCU’s (Historically Black Colleges and University), And while I do get why afirmative action was put in place originally, i go back and forth on if we really need it. I truly believe in working hard for everything i have. Every job I have is because I worked hard in school and made good grades. I got scholorships to undergrad and grad school because I worked hard and didnt need special accomodations because im black. So…on one hand, I think black people will be ok without it because we are very much capable of standing on our own and competing with all races but on the other hand…the playing fields aren’t all equal. You are right, with affirmative action, some better qualified candidates are rejected to make a school or company diverse. But without it many better qualified minorities(not just black) lose out to whites because of there race….so, what do we do? how do we make people give all people a fair chance without legally making them? if we could choose employees or students without ever knowing there race, sex, religon, or anything about them besides there qualifications then maybe it would work but until then….im still undecided. But i guess i dont think it is a total bad thing because it gives some blacks confidence to try and apply and work hard for positions they would shy away from cause it is white dominated. I dont think the black race ever really gained there self worth back after slavery. I dont think some blacks believe they will ever amount to anything because they have been told they cant far longer than they have been told they can. And no, by no means do i think we should use slavery as an excuse for the rest of our lives…after all, what doesnt kill us will make us stronger…and we are still here so it is past time for us to make our presence known in a positive way by proving to the world we are smart and we can compete with all races, however, i do want non-blacks to quit acting like it never happened or worst yet say it happened, its over, now move on just like that. That part of our history was real, and it was painful, not only to blacks but to our country as a whole. So please forgive us when we dont bow down in gratitude everytime we are so called given a head start but you see, some look at it as getting a little push of regaining what has been robbed from them for years and years. But overall, I await the day when we all can be truly equal and race, gender, and all that doesnt play such a major factor in our lives!!!
But as far as the show, the fact is there isnt one candidate who everyone would have liked. everyone has there own individual favorite but it wasnt our decision to make. i personally liked him the best but i liked them all. And I would have been proud of and supported either of them.

I am so glad Aaron won. I liked all the last three. Lisa was a little annoying when she squinted her eyes up all the time. Her food was not what I would cook at home – so I probably would not have watched the show. Adam was ok but his food was not up to par. He performance was good and may have watched his show. Aaron will do great. The REAL DEAL! Innovative and original ideas with plain food. That is what I want to watch. Who cares what color he is – he is my pick. I am white by the way. Grow up people!

Muffin….I’m sorry you didn’t agree with anything at all that I said. I was just being honest. I will agree with you and say that being picked on was a poor choice of words. I never knew my grandparents and my parents never knew their parents. My father was left on the street as a toddler (3yrs.old)to fend for himself when his mother couldn’t take care of him. He grew up in an orphanage. My mother’s parents died during the 1918 flu epidemic. They came to this country from Italy and Austria in the early 1900’s. I don’t ever remember hearing that slavery never happened and it certainly was a terrible thing, so was the holocast…I’m happy to hear that you were able to go to college and graduate school. You make very good points, I agree with alot of them except the “white dominated” statement. We are over 80% of the population so that is a fact that will never change. Here’s a little background and then I’ll let you decide why I feel the way I do. 40 years ago I was accepted into my states university under a special program for “lets say” underprivleged students. All expenses paid, room, board, books the works. Two weeks before school was to start I got a letter in the mail saying they had given my spot to a minority from Newark. Just a few miles away from the school. I could still attend but it would be for night classes and I would have to commute. I lasted a year and a half until the parents could no longer afford to pay for the gas and car to get me there. I was heartbroken. A few years later, now married, my husband went for a really good management position with a large U.S. company. We had a new baby and it would have made all the difference in the world. They openly came out and told him that although he was qualified for the position they had to give the next management spot to a minority….Fast foward 18 years. Our daughter getting ready to graduate 1st. in her class with an almost perfect SAT score applied to 8 colleges. We were all ready to go on the college road trip when all that came in the mail was one acceptance out of the eight. She was heartbroken. She asked me why she worked so hard…I didn’t have an answer. A friend of her’s who was black and a “C” student but was active in clubs applied to 3 Ivy League schools and got accepted at Harvard, Yale and Princeton. She also got accepted at every other school she applied to. Luckily one Ivy school recognized my daughter’s ability and accepted her and she went on to get a law degree and is now very successful…But it was far from easy….So you see everyone has pain in their past, we just have to work through it and move on..This is the first time I’ve talked about this and I hope it helps you see where I’m coming from….Best of luck to you in the future and thanks so much for the conversation, I think in the long run it will help us both…..
Muffin | Jul 30, 2008 | Reply
Im sorry to hear about your struggles. I do not agree with all of which happened to you and yours.Thats where the whole undecided thing comes in….i really dont know the perfect solution, and u are right….we all have had pain and we need to try and work together to help each other…..one thing i do appreciate and acknowledge is that if me and you, 2 perfect strangers, has the patience and openmindedness to carry a rather civil conversation about a rather touchy subject gives me hope for bridging the gap between the races and generations(im only in my early 20’s) well….God bless you and thank you as well for the conversation.

Did any of you watch the show or are you just looking for a reason to say what you have been hiding in you heart?
Aaron was better than the others and should have won.
Lisa – bottom 2 on the first show (should have gone home then) and was told on every show she needed to work on her personality and camera appeal, and to simplify her food. She was not a good team player and only applied herself to food that she wanted to cook and had no variety (one of the guest panelists told her she hated her dish). She would be OK on a Fine Food & fashion show.
Adam – three shows involving un-cooked food…one was an egg. (come on…a 10 year old can cook an egg. No variety in his cooking.
Aaron – already an Executive Chef…won multi-challenges. Was highly praised on most of the others (two Iron Chef, Martha Stewart, Paula Dean, etc.). His problem was becoming friends with the camera.
Aaron was one of the fan favorite (Adam & Lisa received low voting) and everyone was singing his praises before he beat Lisa and Adam.
Once Aaron won, this man was attached for everything…his speech, his family…his looks. .you name it…I have read it. None of these things were discussed when the competition was going on. Lisa was the most heated and Adam was considered silly by some of these same posters.
FN has had three winners before and only one has been very good. They were all white. Did anyone question the fact that they only won because they were white? (they did not have the talent to succeed). Aaron will be one of the best success stories. Why? “No weapon formed against him…….”

Well I see that in 21st century America it is still about one thing and one thing only . . . NOTHING. Only in America where we could turn a FOOD tournament into a political construct. ARE YOU KIDDING?
It’s just FOOD people. It’s great that you have tuned in your overpriced HD TVs to the Food Network to begin with. And as for the winner (Aaron) “having less talent than the other finalists” . . . how do you determine that without eating the meal your self?
Hey “republican” who said “of course another minority takes the spot of well deserving people” Maybe next year one of your “Swingtown” reject friends can get a spot on FN.
Hey “foodie” who says “I am an African American and I think this was a political move on FN’s part to have a person of color win, because it was so very obvious that Lisa and Adam were far more talented.” Again it’s just FOOD.
Why is it that people like you take the time to both complain about not getting attention from white folks and then when you “finally” get a look you also complain about that? The only disgrace is the fact that you agreed with “olddeb” Is olddeb a codeword for NANA?
Hey “Sue” “YOU GOT THAT RIGHT….AFFIRMATIVE ACTION HAS NO PLACE ON A T.V. REALITY SHOW” Wow Sue how profound . . . how were you able to see that through your HD picture? Affirmative action has never had a place on TV apparently. But Sue you forgot to tell “Chris” that BET is owned by Viacom . . . last I checked Viacom is not Black-owned
Hey “Chris” I’m happy for your knowledge of history . . . but BET is owned by white folks. If you don’t like “Big Daddy’s House” then don’t watch it. You will be probably just be getting in from church and lighting a cross “in his honor” anyway.

Adam served raw food twice and the majority of his meals were only okay until the last couple of episoded. Did you watch the show at all? Lisa was pretty good, but Aaron’s food was raved over constantly even by Martha Stewart and when he was interacting with the little girl on Rachel Ray’s show it was so natural and just great overall.
Angel | Aug 4, 2008 | Reply
While I do think that Aaron initially struggled with relating to the audience, I think that overall he was the best choice. If anyone looked at the sneak peak, Lisa’s had to be done several times before she got it right, as well. And Adam, we weren’t even sure he could cook. If you want to talk about favoritism, week after week they talked about how Adam’s food wasn’t up to par- he cooked raw food twice. That’s cooking 101! He should have been kicked off early in the show. The only thing he had going for him was personality, but what good is that on the FOOD NETWORK, if you can’t cook. Also and for the person who said Aaron couldn’t cook- he’s the only one whose dishes were consistently raved over during the competition. If you’d watched the entire season, you’d have seen that. The episode where they had to eat someone else’s dish and describe it, Adam was so busy eating Aaron’s dish he couldn’t even talk. That’s how good it was. Personally, I wanted Aaron to win, but I wouldn’t have minded if Lisa had won. She was a pretty good cook even if her dishes did were a bit more fancy than I would cook at home. Overall I think Aaron won for his ability to cook and to be molded into what they want him to be. So for those who keep hopping on the fact that Aaron didn’t do as well in Vegas as he did on other episodes, all of them did bad at some point during the season. The judges were basing it on total performance throughout the season, not just one failure. And I wish everyone would stop saying he was picked because he was black. As if to say that the only thing he had going for him was that he was black. He was picked because he has excellent culinary skills, he knew about food and the judges could see that if he would relax into being himself he would relate to a lot of people. But more to the point, how many times in our lives have white people been picked because they were white. I mean honestly you mean to tell me that out of all the contestants only two black people were good enough to be a finalist? Please! So even if you were all correct. If the deciding factor was the fact that he was black. Then so what… How you look is used so often in determining hiring practices, admission to schools, and so much more. Bottom line Aaron deserved to win based on his skills alone… No one can take that away from him

You are so dissapointed that Aaron won that you would insult the whole African American race. Since you have the numbers on what percentage of African american children are born to unwed mothers; do you have the numbers on what percentage of whites are on food stamps. I’d also like to know the percentage of whites that are nut jobs and go around blowing up schools. It seems your race has been plagued with hate from the beginning of time. However, they had no issues allowing black women raise their children, cook for their household and most importantly satisfy white men in bed. I think it’s something to be said about black cock, when a man will get out the bed with his white wife and walk across the way to get some goodies from a black woman. HELLO!!!! Now that’s cooking!

Nearly 200 reality-TV hopefuls showed up at Portland’s downtown Marriott last Thursday for a crack at competing on “The Next Food Network Star.” But instead of trying to elbow their way to stardom a la “Survivor,” they exchanged pleasantries like they were at an office mixer.
The room’s charismatic centerpiece, however, was Teddy Wells, an actor from Hawaii with a roaring laugh and giant shell around his neck. He’s been on “Baywatch,” “Fantasy Island” and “Lost.”
“You’d probably remember me best from my one scene in the operating room, where Ben elbowed me and I escaped,” he said of a “Lost” appearance. For five hours, men and women, young and old, switched seats to be next to him.
I’m praying that my brother makes it to New York to compete for TNFNS. I’m sure you guys will like him. He has lots to offer to the Food Network.

face it everyone… 2008 was the year of Affirmative Action! we have black prez who made comments about “typical white people” …but gosh darn it he’s gonna “unite” folks… what a wanker.
Now it appears Top Chef is about to keep up with the Jones so to speak and do exactly what FN did. We have a black woman, by my prediction, about to win this season by cooking pies and tarts and gumbo and serving carbonated kool-aid as a cocktail. Of course she’s gonna win, they’re in New Orleans” “chocolate city” and won’t we all feel so much better watching… wait for it… “the first African American winner of Top Chef”??? for god’s sake, i guess we have to get all these FIRSTS over with so we can get back to real competitions and elections and actually vote for the people who are most qualified. btw, yea… people like Barb are real good ambassadors for diversity. lovely language there woman
