Melissa McMillin and Jeremy Gebhardt Modern Love Wedding on TODAY – The Today Show announced the winners of their “Modern Love” competition, a contest which allows viewers to select who will be the winners of a dream New York wedding. It also focuses on the planning aspects as rings, clothes and other factors are decided via vote.
Melissa McMillin and Jeremy Gebhardt came out on top. The couple in their early 20’s have been kept apart for several years as he serves in Afghanistan, and their win was no surprise for many that supported the couple to bag the final prize.
But controversy has arisen as it was pointed out that the four finalist couples were all straight, despite gay marriage now being legal in a number of states and countries. This has led gay rights group GLAAD to ask why no same sex couples made it into the final four.
In fact, no same sex couples made it very far, at all. Originally, they were barred from entering, as the producers said the marriage had to be legal in New York, which has not yet allowed gay marriage despite having one of the largest homosexual populations in the nation.
They later changed their mind after protests for several human rights groups around the country, switching the application from “Bride and Groom” to “Applicant 1 and Applicant 2”.
However, it was likely more an issue of marketing than bias. With two people of the same sex, the diversity in marketing choice from sponsors may have been limited, which could have factored into the decision to allow all slots to be taken by straight couples.*Sponsored Links*
