Mad Men Season 4 Episode 5:Watch The Chrysanthemum And The Sword Online S04E05 – Mad Men Season 4 Episode 5 called “The Chrysanthemum and the Sword“ which was directed by Lesli Linka Glatter and written by Erin Levy was broadcast on AMC last night.
After an impressive premiere it appears that Mad Men is slowly losing it touch and realness by over-dramatizing every scene and by turning into the main players of the series into caricatures of themselves.
Let us take the obvious cartoon character who goes by the name of Roger Sterling for example.
We can all understand that he fought in World War II, and that he has some anger left inside toward the Japanese. But the scene where Roger abruptly steps into the meeting and randomly starts insulting the Honda businessmen was a bit surprising and was overplayed seeing that he showed that he was anti-Japanese before.
Continuing with the weirdness,in last night’s installment we learned that Sally started masturbating.
Sure we can comprehend that 10 year old Sally is having some issues- dealing with the sudden divorce of her parents and that her relationship with her mother is not very good at the moment- but are these reasons enough to turn her into serial masturbator who is chopping off her hair at every chance she gets?
Last night Betty showed her cartoon side by first slapping Sally for cutting her hair. And secondly threatening to cut off her fingers if she is ever caught masturbating again.
Here is the plot of the episode:
Pete enters SCDP into a competition run by Honda, earning the ire of Roger, who attempts to undercut the other partners’ efforts to win the account; another competitor attempts to position himself as Don’s rival. Sally’s erratic behavior disturbs Betty and Henry enough to seek a psychiatrist over Don’s objections. This episode takes place in March 1965.
Despite the fact that the episode pushed a little too hard and was on the edge of turning Mad Men into a cliche tale of the ’60s -there were some good moments such as :
-After talking to the therapist Betty starts starring at that dollhouse for a long which have wondering what was crossing her mind?
-The last scene where Betty who is the worst mother of the year asked Carla the housekeeper to drop Sally off at her first therapy session rather than take her, herself.
Here are few lines from this episode:
“You look like a Mongoloid!” Ah, the smooth ways and polite manners of Bobby Draper.
“Now, if you don’t mind, I have to get some gifts wrapped and get these chrysanthemums out of the building. Apparently, they symbolize death.”
“She was masturbating, Don. In front of a friend.”
“How does she not fall over?”
