Ok how about this history repeats itself. Dexter was rased by a single father that somehow knew a code for killing killers. Whos to say his adopted father wasn’t a serial killer as well. So now Dexter will raise 2 normal kids like deb and one thats just like him. The code will be passed on just as it was to Dexter. As for season 6 Dexter is gone and little Dex continues in the family tradition. While one sibling is protecting him the other is out to get him, Oh the possiblities are endless.

Oh my god, I am so upset with the writers of this show.

I have watched Dexter from the every first episode, Always with great anticipation. However now that I have seen this seasons ending … I am beyond angry. I am furious. The writers of this show have completely ruined everything I loved about the last two seasons. I cannot believe they killed Rita.

    I am so so angry.
This show and this network have lost a loyal viewer.

I called and canceled my Showtime subscription the day after the season finale. I WILL NOT be watching next year!

I cannot believe the writers could make such a large and unnecessary mistake!

The last two seasons are completely ruined. Without reason. A complete waste.

What else can I say …. I’m heartbroken.

First of all, matt grow up you acting like a little kid who dropped his ice cream cone and is screaming for a new one, and i thought the ending was superb instead of having dexter struggling with his cover id, we will now see a dexter full of insatiable rage and if you read the books you would know that astor and cody are just like dexter and he does teach them the code although that may not be the storyline the show’s writers decided to take but it would be really cool if that is the case and if not then who knows there are a world of possibilities to take this show, maybe dex will pass on the code and be captured personally i would like to see dexter paired with a true kindred spirit another serial killer who is like dexter in almost everyway including only killing bad people (it would be interesting if it was a female)!

I totally agree with Matthew…I didn´t expect it.. I think in last seasons they created man who wanted to change just because of his family and it was great!!!But now-who will he be? the angry husband and killer?the sad and frustrated father? I don´t like any of these possibilities….I´m really disappointed..

I am so happy she’s out of the picture. She was a controlling b$$$$ always looking for, and creating reasons to “have a talk”… She was a hypocrit. She was on his a$$ about lying and keeping secrets. She had plenty of her own! What about having been married one time before Paul? There’s a nice big secret. Well done, writers, well done!

  9. Gerard Gordon-Toylor | Dec 19, 2009 | Reply

Well, I was waiting to be disappointed however, the writers got it right. I do not agree with some viewers of Dexter that “Rita” should not have been killed. I was looking forward to it and hoped that the writers would see the sense in getting rid of her as they did. Personally, I found her character annoying and contributed little to the overall theme. There is much more room to manoeuvre now and the plot twists are infinite. Don’t get me wrong, I am no woman hater, it’s just that she seemed a little too needy at times and a little narcisitic – just my opinion.

John Litgow as the “Trinity Killer” was excellent, he deliverd, and like “Sgt. Doakes” I am sorry to see him go. He raised the bar, and as a result, I can’t wait to see who’s next.

The office romance/marriage between “Sgt. Batista” and “Lt. La Guerta” is a bit confusing and I have a few ideas with regard to how these two chracters will be developed, but i’ll wait patiently to see if the writers get it right again ;-)

“Debra Morgan” is not given enough range, and needs to be expanded, she is alot smarter than she is given credit for and her potty-mouth along with an intense personality contributes to her not getting as much respect. Season six (6) will see her being promoted and I believe that she will take another, closer look, at her brother; giving rise to a confrontation of epic sibling-proportions, blood is thicker than water, but in this case; it’s only as thick as the adoption papers.

All in all, “Dexter” as a series is in a class by itself. All the characters invariably deliver and will continue to do so in season 6. Somehow I think we are in for a surprise, and a former, Sgt. Doakes return… wishfull thinking? i know, its just that i liked the intensity he brought to the plot, the rivalry between him and my/our favourite serial killer was great!

    I can’t wait for season 6!

  10. Gerard Gordon-Toylor | Dec 19, 2009 | Reply

You must be kidding, the door is now open for more twists and turns, I admit that there were times that I felt that the series had taken a turn for the worse and probably should have been dumped into the Gulf Stream however, the writers redeemed themselves and pulled it off once again.

As a series, I think season (6) will be the last and like six feet under we will see another series emerge to hold our interest with characters that are believable in the unique twisted way that only Showtime can deliver.

If you’re gone, then you’ve just made room for those of us who like to see the envelope punched and not pushed. “Dexter” is only the begining, and we will see Showtime do more in the not too distant future to make it worthwhile to sit and invest and hour or two of viewing time in programming that is well written and directed. So much of the content produced and presented by the other netwoks fails to inspire any longlasting interest and soon fade from memory.

First of all as stated above…Dexters dad is a figment of his imagination, because he is dead. So he could not have anything to do with Rita’s death. Trinity killed her. Second the new season will be 5 not 6. And as far as being mad at the writers of the show, they have nothing to do with it, because Dexter is based on a series of books written by Jeff Lindsay. I myself cant wait for season 5.

I think it was pretty messed up that they killed off rita but they sort of had to, now dexter will be able to do what he was supposed to do the show is about a forensics guy who is also a serial killer, not a loving father and husband. I am still shocked at the season finale. It just sucks taht there is 9 months in between seasons

Whoever said the writers have nothing to do with the plot is a moron. Holy s$$$ yes it is based on the books but the show is not completely derived from the books. It is a compilation of the fundementals of the books as well the s$$$ written in the screen plays. They killed Rita because it had to be done. Or else they wouldnt have gotten their contract renewed with showtime. After seasons two and three they could not leave the viewers with a bad taste in their mouths. This is why they needed to do something so outrageous. In season 5 they will probably do something again so the viewer will be like wtf. Thats the point you get a show that grabs the viewer so the company can profit they dont give a f$$$ about how you srry a$$ losers feel about Rita. Grow a fuckn pair its a fuckn televesion show you loser. So stop praying to Michael C. Hall shrine and a get a real fuckn life you incompetent f$$$ nuggets.

Unexpected twist at the end of season 4. Good move by the writers , the storyline was getting very predictable and boaring. Can’t wait for the season 5th.

  26. Herr | Dec 29, 2009 | Reply

I think since rita’s hand was not pointing to any smudge. there is a possibility that the writer is trying to introduce a new main bad guy. Though i’m pretty sure the main point in the 5th season will be dexter hell bent on chopping every bad person he comes across. The grand parents will take the other kids. dexter sells the house and moves into a condo near his docked boat. Harry will help dexter solve the case of who murdered his wife. Deb will take it personal and try to do solve the case the “good cop way” while dexter will take any lead he can and go the “serial killer” route. I’m guessing the finale of the 5th season would be dexter coming face to face with the main bad guy. And all though out the season the bad guy leaves his kills and clues for dexter.

First off, great season Finale. It opens up a lot of new plot points, and the writers did an excellent job of building up to it all season. Dexter’s struggle with his father’s “ghost”, which has become his conscience in a way, over spreading himself too thin, putting his family at risk, and breaking the code was a great setup to the ending.
Also remember! Dexter will now have to explain, with his erratic behavior in headbutting Quinn and getting arrested the day before, and feud with Trinity, why Trinity would target Dexter, and prove that he’s innocent of the crime himself!
Season 5 is already shaping up to continue Dexter’s impressive run.

I am sad they killed off Rita. Dexter’s relationship with Rita is what made me like him because he was so sweet and we got to see his soft side. Now Dexer is missing romance (Batista and LaGuerta dont count because they arent as important of characters)so a lot of viewers will be upset. In my opinion Rita is a great loss to the show.

  32. knowursh@# | Dec 31, 2009 | Reply

Dexters dad is dead. His dad is dexter’s split personality. Not alive, and not a ghost but dexter himself. It’s a way for the writer to make sure the charcter can express himself, and the veiwers can keep up. Its a new cutting edge show that ranks at the top with sopranos, and deadwood (some of my favorites). And you should start over at season one to keep up if u don’t understand if u like it that much, that way your not confused.

  33. knowursh@# | Dec 31, 2009 | Reply

matt, why it could be leading up to a story you might love that is why its not done, plus it s a story don’t go and do a “Christine Hill” over it. geeze

  34. JJ | Jan 1, 2010 | Reply

I’m glad Rita is gone. She’s not too bright and her monotone was annoying.
It’s going to be hard to explain since Trinity’s bathroom victims weren’t married with children and he always cleaned up his mess afterward, leaving no blood on the floors.
Maybe they will deem it a copy cat murder. Maybe Dexter will wake up from a dream on his way to see her, and bland old Rita will still be alive.
Deb will be getting to the bottom of it all, I’m sure.
PS Jenna- Dexter’s marriage with Rita is a fraud. He only did things he thought a normal husband SHOULD do. It was all an act, a cover for his dark side, only to make him look normal to everyone around him. Did you see the previous 3 seasons?
The problem with Rita isn’t her dying, it’s how the heck is he going to find another woman naive enough to not see him for what he is or better yet, someone that knows everything and will accept him for it.
I’m looking forward to seeing how this unfolds.

your all stupid, rita is not dead! watch the season 4 final episode and tell me how trinity got in dexters house and killed rita. you cant because he didnt and shes not dead.

  36. Tim | Jan 2, 2010 | Reply

okay..the stupidity in some of these comments is enraging. First of all, Dexter’s dad is not alive, and he’s not Dexter’s “split personality.” Harry’s presence is merely a personification of Harry’s presence in Dexter’s mind. It is a way to represent the way that the “code of Harry” is part of Dexter. Second, Trinity killed Rita. If you don’t think that’s the case, then you are a F$$$$$$ retard.

  37. Eric | Jan 3, 2010 | Reply

Man I feel bad for the pressure on these writers.
Rita dying, Dexter’s son being “born in blood,” Deb sniffing around Dexter’s past, Dexter raising three kids all on his own..

its weird because everything is so different in the series of dexter books, which is where the show was base off of. I havent finished boook #4 but in it he is teaching cody and astor how to be like him because they know about him, and deb knows about him in the books too. in the first book, his bro brian wasnt killed he got away and laguerta was killed in book 1. doaks has never been killed in the books but he doesnt have hands or a toungue and i think he might not have feet either – they were all cut off i think in book 2?? and dex saved him. book 3 wasnt the best, but neither was season 3, they were different from each other but still not as good as 1 2 and 4.

I was just sad because I loved watching the “human” in him emerge through her. i have mixed emotions about this i liked rita because a bit of her character made dexter evolve more but at the same point i liked how everything was in season one when there wasnt all the comitment stuff to deal with. i think the best season of the show was season 1 and how he killed his own brother. dexter stayed grounded well enough while he had rita and the kids but out of all the seasons he was able to protect the people close to him like his sister, batista from rape charges, ritas kids, lt laguerta from prado but now he met someone that matched him trinity was ready to die but dexter wasnt ready for rita to die trinity got the last laugh this next season is going to be a rollercoster between being careful and going all out nuts and second guessing himself should be diffrent but hell hes changed in all the seasons in little ways but this was huge

Trinity did not kill Rita, and Dex and Deb figure this out, the past came back to bite Dex in that bath tub. still can’t belive Rita was written off, now she’ll slum it on Despr Housewives.(Can’t stand that garbage T.V.)

Wow! I am still shocked by the finale. It stayed with me for a few days after watching. I will miss Rita, but she did get in the way of Dexter and his dark passenger. The killing of Rita opens up room for brand new story lines. For example, since Rita was the wife a Miami PD employee, they will be all over this case. Dexter will have to work double time to help cover up why she was really killed. Also, will Dexter handle the rage? He killed Trinity, but at the time he didn’t know that Trinity had already killed Rita–so did he actually get the revenge he wanted? What’s goign to happen to Astor and Cody? I can’t wait to find out where this goes and if in fact the “code” will be passed onto the children. Can’t wait for September!

In the books, Dexter takes Cody and Aster under his wings when he detects similar “needs” that he had growing up.

The writers need to go back to the source of this character and the books.

  51. alfredough | Jan 8, 2010 | Reply

Maybe trinity’s wife or daughter killed rita. Trinity is just too obvious and that is the only thing to make me think that. I don’t know where the show is going now however but I am scared for how much there is left of the series and although it does not overlay well with the books it is good and the books were much to liberal with gore and serial killer aprenticeship probably even for showtime LOL.

Lots of wild comments so they are doing something right. I like Dexter evolving but Rita was getting in the way a bit and I don’t see how this saves any free time if he has 3 kids to raise now as a single parent unless he just gives them all up which would be a big step backwards. Maybe Rita comes back as a ghost and offers an apposing view to Harry’s code?

  56. Dexter | Jan 13, 2010 | Reply

you know with rita being killed now dexter will be like super killer, the drive to protect ones family is strong and now he will refine his code to make sure nothing like that ever happens again. sure it makes killing a bit harder but that is what is going to make it exciting, to see how he pulls it off now.

I’ve been following all dexter episodes and I have concluded that this is by far the best show including showtime and HBO. Although I was very sad to see Rita die, I think this was and excellent and totally unexpected ending. I happen to love mystery stories since I was a kid and the best part of each detective is unexpected turn.

I love stories that are unpredictable and have an open end that leaves viewer guessing rather than the happy end that is so papular in most Hollywood stories. Prodictability is boring and and leaves no room for imagination. Although harsh, this ending left a lot of possibilities for season 5. I am so psyched to see where the writers would take it.
Great gob on this show and again I still think it’s the best one of all the series I’ve seen so far. “Californication”, “Sex in the City” can’t even come close.

for the next series consider this:
from deb’s perspective; season one she was kidnapped and nearly killed by the ice truck killer (dexter’s brother); season two, dexter is stalked by sgt. doakes (who she believes to have been the bay harbour butcher); season three dex becomes best buds with miguel prado (who is dicovered to have killed ellen wolfe by LaGuerta, before being apparently killed by the skinner); and now in season four rita is killed by the trinity killer…. if deb is as good a cop as she’s supposed to be she’ll get curious, and what would her reaction be if she found out

I too, like most of you, have watched Dexter since season 1 however, I have not read the books. I did very much enjoy the finale, the perfect ending. Now in trying to connect the dots and be your own detective on figuring out what happens next season, like antonichryst said, you must take into account that every main foe in every season has been killed by Dexter or in the case of season 2(with Lola)because of dexter. So with Deb having found out who Dexters mother and brother were, she could in turn find Dexter in her cross hairs, and because of the FBI taking over the Trinity killer case and Deb being the stubborn b$$$$ she is to have brought it to the level it is, she may be promoted. Just my personal speculation, cant wait til season 5.

Maybe the writers didnt have a choice maybe the woman who plays Rita didnt want to sign on for season 5 so they had to weed her character out.. ultimately by killing her…

  67. Ashley | Jan 16, 2010 | Reply

I too, like most people was sad to see Rita go, and in such a horrific way at that. Although, when you think about it, it was probably time for her to go. Throughout season 4 it was a constant battle for Dex to please his wife, Rita and the serial killer inside. It was almost dreadful watching Dex constantly make excuses to Rita so that he could go out and fulfill his dark deeds. Rita was a crucial part of the show because she brought everything back down to earth, but she never could have kept him from killing. When you think about it, it was really messed up that she had to die because of Dexter’s line of “work”. But it does open new doors for the show, but im sure there is a possibility that it is a dream. Dexter’s reaction to the murder was quite calm considering how she was murdered. He should’ve been infuriated. And for those who don’t see the time frame where Trinity could’ve gotten the chance to kill her, well, watch the season again, you’ll find it. I am thrilled to see the new season :)

Good riddance to Rita! More than once I thought “Jeez, Dex, just put that henpecking ol’ witch on your table, would ya?”

Dexter is a modern day Pinocchio — he wants to be human and he constantly searches out life lessons to help him get there. Perhaps being a widower full of rage (and possibly self-loathing because he didn’t get rid of Trinity when he should have) he’ll learn some self-control and how to channel that rage into something good for Harrison, Astor and Cody.

    And maybe not.

All I can say is, I will never again have to hear “Dexter, we need to talk” when Dexter is in the midst of a crisis like his sister being shot.

Read today that Michael C. Hall announced he has Hodgkins Lymphoma but has been treated and is now in remission. Our best to him.

What a Season 4 ending! Not expected at all. At first I was numb, thinking Rita’s death must not be real – a vision – a way to trick the audience. Then I was annoyed that the writers should kill off a main character.

In future sight, unpredictability is important in a storyline and that certainly was. The writers are very brave.

Now, I’ve accepted that this is a way to open up many more possibilities for the future.

    1. Will Astor and Cody go live with Grandma?
    2. Will we jump into the future when a) Dexter’s son is exhibiting signs of following in his ‘old man’s’ footsteps? b) Daddy can teach his son ‘The Code’?
    3. How will his son Harrison demonstrate these behaviour traits?
    4. Did Trinity really kill Rita or is there a new serial killer for Season 5?

This could go any exciting and enticing direction.

Holosweet will be there for Season 5 and beyond!

I’m happy Rita is Dead she got on my damn nerves the Whole Series and man after reading some of the previous posts… which i stopped after a while from the complete stupidity of some of them… yall dont know what the hell yall are talking about.. yea most likely it might follow the book a bit in S5 in regards to dexter teaching the kids the code which he did in the books, which will be interesting to see.

but in the books i dont know if rita dies in it im sure she Prolly does, but in the books they got their dark passenger from theirs abbusive father which wasnt actually introduced in the books

Dexter 5th season will definitely be the last one. Dexter messed so much when hunting Trynity (or maye better called Fournity) and made so many mistakes, that it is almost impossible to get rid off from such a mess. Too many people have seen him in ambiguous situations eg:
    - Batista watching him talking with Trynity at Miami Police Station
    - Debra knowing now that he’s a brother of Ice Truck Killer.

Well, screenwriters – you need to work really hard to make a new season opening likely to believe.

September 2010 – so many months to wait :)

Not likely. He has a BABY, remember…it’s not like he can just call up Deb and be like “watch the baby so I can go kill someone”.

Personally, I found the interpersonal relationships (especially w/ Rita) to be the heart of this show. It was interesting BECAUSE Dexter obviously possessed the humanity he claimed not to.

This is a step backwards plotwise, and not well considered as to where it will lead. First, without Rita, Dexter will now have NO free time where before he just had a little. There is no plausible way to write it up that someone else watches his kid from 9P-2A so he can go kill.

Also, to the people who say “they’re basing it on the books,” Rita doesn’t die in the books…because she is important. Just like she was in the show. :( too bad they dropped the ball here and eliminated one of the best characters.

Thirdly, just because some of the posters here want to call her a b$$$$ or whiney…guess what, she had a hard life, and I thought it was played pretty realistically…especially with Dexter’s sometimes absenteeism on the family front.

Also important-what will the police think when they find the body? Dexter cant hide it because Rita’s disappearence would cause too many questions, but he cant leave it because Trinity is supposed to be gone. This may link Dexter to Trinity in season 5.

Hey, it could be good, it could s$$$… you’ll never know. PLUS i think they killed Rita off so they CAN have more to write. It’s too bad for Dexter & for their kids that Rita was killed, but personally I didn’t care for her too much. She was kind of annoying. Dexter was busy enough with his job plus killing bad guys, but she always had to call him to pick up milk or come take care of the baby. It’s like she didn’t do a damn thing. Does anyone agree with me about Rita? Anyway, the next season’s going to be interesting I’m sure.

A femme fatal serial killer… that would be hot. The cancer sucks though. I wish him the best.

  91. Griffin | Jan 30, 2010 | Reply

I found myself so attached to Trinity that by the time the jig was up, I was very conflicted and upset by the thought of his death! I do, however, believe that Trinity WAS the one who killed Rita, and not some mystery character who we have yet to meet. I think that her murder was even mentioned in a round-about way during Dexter’s last conversation with Trinity, when Trinity tells him that “It’s already too late.”

Regarding the death of Rita, I think that not only was it a riveting and necessary evil, but I was glad (although astonished) that she was gone! I found her irritating, bossy, and all in all, a dead end character.

I think the show could probably do without about 75% of the women in the plot, women who are more of an aggravation than they are a pleasure to watch. And before you accuse me of being a pig, consider this… I am a woman myself.

Deb, clean up your mouth and read a couple of books, maybe then I could tolerate you. I am always so annoyed by how slow you are to catch on, and how arrogant you are when you finally arrive at the conclusion!!!!!

I am excited about season 5 and wish we didn’t have to wait until September for it to start.

I dont think rita was an annoying wife! Married to Dexter is not a easy job. Although he treat her very well but without communication, a marriage cant last long! especially you married a serial killer!! hahah…

Dexter seems losing his mind in Season 4.He kill what he want and think they he is doing the right thing. He completely forget and ignore the the code his father gave him. He suppose to kill the murderers who can escape the law!

But Dexter is a good character because he constantly questions himself and find out who he is. This is something we should do in our lives to know ourself better!

Nothing to do with Dexter’s dad. The guy is dead! Dexter’s thoughts just take the form of his Dad. I was very bummed and upset when I realized Rita was gone. I really liked Dexter having a family and him defending them. But the writers always deliver brilliant brilliant entertainment, so I’m trying to trust them.

My bad, it’s season 5!! Even though it’s based on a series of books, the series does not automatically translate into a series for televison. Writers are required to make it “palatable for viewing” how many times have you read a good/great book and the writers, producers, directors got it wrong? All i’m saying is that this series is well done and I can’t wait for what happens next -having not had the opportunity to read the books. If i have read the book(s) then I don’t really care to to view the made for tv/movie version, if i have not read the book(s) then I will have a look-see, and this to date, is great viewing. Thanks for the corrections to what i may have been misinformed or ignornat about, ignorance can be taught however, stupidity lasts forever.

I can’t beleive that there are ppl who didn’t know that Dexter’s dad is dead -and has been all along- or that Rita was really killed -duh? I know that some may have missed a few episodes however, a little common sense ppl – notice he (Dexter’s dad) never comes over for steaks and a beer, never interacts with the grand-kids/wife, his daughter, old colleagues at Metro? Pay a little more attention to the plot and then you will figure out that which is now confusing to you, ask questions -no question is stupid. To those of you who think that you are perfect and make no mistakes: GET A LIFE! There is no need to use profanity and call ppl stupid, they maybe misinformed or ignorant. By the way, ppl with a limited vocabulary rely on the use of profanity -expletives- when they do not know which word to use or they say ‘you know’ alot to fill in the blanks -read something without pictures in it for a change! Oh, and GET A LIFE!

I want it to turn out like the book with Astor and Cody turning out to be like Dexter. I don’t think it will happen to Harrison since he’s way younger then when Dexter was when Harry found him in the pool of his mom’s blood.
But who knows… I hope they renew for season 6 and 7.

And secondly some of the earlier posters were talking about how great it is that Rita is gone because now Dexter has some freedom to go about his habit… Dex is a single father of three working a job that gives him next to no downtime…. not really a good life for a murderer ;) and that is why i am excited to see this next season so please please please time hurry up!

The series without her will never be the same for me. I will still watch, and I’m sure love, each episode. But without Rita in each episode to give me the wonderful feeling she always did in my stomach, I can say I will be disappointed. I am living a pipe dream here when hoping somehow they will plot twist the ending somehow into it being a dream he had after killing Trinity or another figment of his imagination the Harry was showing him. 144. Jack | Mar 5, 2010 | Reply

I think mm17 is correct: Trinity did NOT kill Rita!!

    Think about it.

    1) Harrison sitting in the blood was a direct jab at Dexter’s “beginning.”

    2) Even though the bathtub murder was a staple of the Trinity killer, he reserved it for single young females.

    3) Anyone recall the movie “7″? I would think as Dexter is getting ready to butcher Arthur, (or Walter, depending on which season you watch) that Arthur would have taken a dig at Dex…basically bragging that he had already killed his wife.

My guess is it’s gonna be Quinn…Detective Quinn has been up Dexter’s arse for a while now. He somehow found out about Dexter’s past (through Deb maybe?) and after his GF’s suicide and the fact she was the Trinity killer’s daughter…..thinking Quinn just loses it.

To put things into perspective, the season finale was the right way to go. The show is called Dexter for a reason. Essentially the other characters are only there to paint a picture, or other pieces to head the lead character in new directions. That is exactly what the season finale did. For the past two seasons they built the series to show how Dexter was dealing with his surroundings (that being how to balance his dark passenger with his family life). The series has a spectrum of light to dark. This show always creeps between the middle of those two, and lately has been shading more towards the light. What a better way to balance the future of this profound TV series!

i am extreamly disappointed rita died heart crunching really i wasn’t expecting rita to die but your all right it opens up so much more opportunity for dexter to excel in more story line s the possibility’s are endless….someone would have had to know about dexter’s past about him being born in blood the end is much to similar to dexter’s childhood memories, sure the trinity killer aka arther could have looked into it but highly doubtful. towards the end arther was to consumed on trying not to be caught and trying to keep a distance away from dexter knowing what he is capable of hence arther wanting to flea miami. rita is dead yes but the trinity killer did not kill her arther did not have the time and dexter was behind him the whole way so it is impossible….someone who knows dexter did it someone who knows who dexter really is. the miami metro had released the bathtub murders to the public so it could have been anyone who had mimic the trinity killings, my guess is the neighbor aka elliot if you remember back when cody was in a fight at school because one of his friends dad’s said they saw dexter leave quite possible he was followed hmmm elliot anyone. sure elliot had a thing for rita but through out this whole tv drama there have been a few messed up minds i would not be surprised if elliot was angry at dexter and rita or elliot had his own dark passenger or i could be all wrong about elliot i dont know all i know for a fact is that trinity DID NOT KILL RITA it was a copy cat!

I doubt it was the writer’s fault since the character playing Rita signed a contract for a spot on Desperate Housewives earlier in the year… perhaps they were forced to write her out because she wanted to move onto a new show??

Season 4 was awesome and definately a boost from season 3. Looking forward to the 5th season… definately agree with it being Quinn or Elliot the neighbor.

  155. Jack | Mar 11, 2010 | Reply

I hear ya Ms. Sarah…..EXCEPT I don’t think Elliot only because of the “dig” at Dexter regarding Harrison in the blood.

Joey Quinn or someone else wth acess to police records is still my guess.

We and a few others KNOW it’s not Arthur/Walter simply because the writers want us to think it was….that way it’ll be easier to set us up for another twist.

Anyone know why John Lithgow’s character(Trinity) changed names between seasons?

I think Arthur killed Rita…I noticed in the end Arthur said “it’s all finished” … unless there’s a copycat killer, i assume his masterpiece is finished when Dexter bludgeoned Arthur’s head (grande finale) that ended Trinity’s killing spree and cycle.

During season 5 I nearly threw up in some parts, because it was just too intense and i was on the edge of my seat, hah.

Deb is going to keep fishing up Dexters past and since she is smart, connect the dots. When Harrison was found i his mothers blood by Dexter, i also think it was a symbolic “beginning” … like for arthur to kill a 10 year old boy … Harrison is Dexters beginning.

Okay. This is the only other, lol, possible scenario. Trinity forced Rita to take her own life using the threat of killing Dexter and possibly others. Now Rita, knowing her life is, without question, moments away from being over is and was extremely concerned with the thought of losing Dexter and what it would do to their(her) family, finally submitted to trinity’s option. Seems logical to me. ALSO TO YOU TAXI DRIVER’S OUT THERE, what is standard procedure when multi-taxi-ing a family going on vacation to their first stop only to realize that a, now probably frantic, smokin’ hot milf forgot something at the house to which you turn around and drive back to wait while same said milf is juggling a purse, flopping baby, and the always hard-as-blank to find house key among the others all-the-while yelling “I’LL BE RIGHT BACK!!!!!” and never does? Lunch break? Mid-day stretch? 124-point vehicle inspection time, or some kind of actual concern or wonder? HMMMMMMMM….
    That is all.

I’m a little bit pissed off that they killed Rita in such fashion, but i think the writer was trying to send a message that Dexter isn’t some super human killer…

And that eventually, the police will start to make the connections “All the killers are dissapearing”…Another killer.

Also, i like the finale because they made a straight comparison to dexter and trinity. Trinity could of just got in his mustang and drove off, but he went and killed Rita….Dexter could of just went with Rita, but decided Trinity was much more important, and thus went to kill him.

They are both very similar, and i expect the police to be on dexter’s tail next season. Also, as for the passing of the code, what i’ve noticed is that Dexter is swaying farther and farther away from the code. And Rita is dead, technically, because he did so.

I think he will be passing on the code to his son, and as soon as he does the police will catch up with him and bam…We got us a season 6 opener, 15 years later.

    Oh….Darkly Dreaming Dexter!

I liked Rita but she had to go in order for the story to advance. One of the major themes this season was the conflict between being a family guy and a serial killer. I predict with the wife gone, Dexter will take the blood/revenge thirsty serial killer route.

I’m quite curious to learn what will happen to the kids. Deb knowing about Dexter’s past, may cause her to pay more attention to his actions…who knows what she will discover once she does that.

For those who think Dexter’s marriage was a fraud so he could act “normal” you are totally wrong. Although his relationship with Rita started on that pretext, he obviously did care about her. This is displayed on many occasions, such as when he punched out the neighbor…he was doing what he wanted to do, not what he felt he “should” do.

I didn’t know this show is based on a series of books, I can’t wait to read them!

Dexter may have to chop Rita into pieces and feed her to the fish to cover up his association with Trinity. Then she’ll just be a missing person. She was nice to look at, as was the British woman Lila. They’ll of course need to replace Rita with another attractive woman. Has anyone noticed how Batista (spelling) refers to Dexter as “socio”? Is this a Spanish word, or is does he just instinctively know that Dex is a sociopath. Also, since Dexter has a short-circuited emotional switchboard will he even really care that Rita is dead? He could probably cook and eat his kids and not lose sleep.

First of all, on a show like this, it would be too much easy to believe that Rita died just like that. There are two reasons : 1 either she will be back in his imaginations like his father. 2 : she is not really dead and she will appear way later like the girl on Prison Break.
Trinity is until now the best serial killer Dexter had to kill until now. It will be difficult to make a fifth season without risking to disappoint people. There is no way Dexter’s father is alive. However it would be fun to play something between Debra and Dexter like it happend between him and Doakes. I dont think there would be something interesting with his child. Its just a kid after all

SNOOP.. You are clueless . It has already be confirmed that Julie Benz WILL NOT be back this season. The producers and Benz said so HERSELF. She will NOT be back in the form of a ghost either as it is such a lame idea.

  182. Deedz | Mar 30, 2010 | Reply

I agree with a lot of the above comments, but disagree with a lot too. I can’t believe what some people interpret from the simple things that are included in every episode like Harry’s appearances. It’s merely the best way to include the code of Harry and how in times of stress Dexter’s mind always goes back to the code, and back to the order of Harry. Harry is not a real living character in the show, nor a ghost. C’mon people.

I’m not fully happy with the ended nor fully disappointed. But, for how great the writing has been in this show, the writers sure left some loop holes in how Trinity could have possibly murdered Rita.

1st Trinity searched Dexter’s address on the internet white pages. The only listing with a D.Morgan led him to Dexter’s old pad, now Debra’s. So, how did Trinity find the actual address.

2nd If she was quickly going back to the house to get her I.D. the cab would have been still waiting for her outside the house while she quickly ran in, maybe even leaving baby Harrison in the cab (most parents wouldn’t)…but

3rd All of Trinity’s killings were amazingly clean crime scenes he cleaned up after himself, so why the mess with Rita? Added to that thought…All of Trinity’s kills were in a pattern besides killing the wrong Kyle Butler when he got in the way. So, he never succeeded with his first kill of the ritual so why did he move on to the next symbolic kill in the bathtub. And to add to that even more all of the past bathtub kills were “younger” brunette females to symbolize his sister. So why kill Rita in this way, especially when he’s planning to move on. It doesn’t match his pattern at all, and was very messy.

4th The end scene became kind of blurred as it does when Dexter sees Harry, or when he has other flashbacks or dreams. I know Dexter did see Harry and have a flashback in this scene, but the whole seen seemed to be this way.

There are so many other things that made this episode messy. All I’m saying with all of this is that if they truly did kill Rita off, I surely expected a better way of doing so from the writers, with no loop holes like this. It’s anybodies guess to what next season will bring, and I like many others can’t believe we’ll be waiting until September. Also just because there has been statements about Rita been gone from both the writers and her actress, I wouldn’t say that makes it 100% official. It could be to through everyone off of what season 5 will actually include. I’m not saying that’s the case for sure either, but I wouldn’t rule out the possibility.

  183. Nick | Mar 30, 2010 | Reply

Okay, who ever thinks that Harry is still alive should just kill there selves, i’ve met some stupid people in my time of life, but geez… why do you think the image turns slightly brighter and blurry… it’s just his imagination to help him reflect on what he should do or has done…

  185. Timzy | Mar 31, 2010 | Reply

I couldn’t agree more with Deedz. Trinity killing Rita just seemed too rushed. I am not saying that the writing was not fantastic, but to just end a character that has consistently developed from a battered and distant woman to now a passionate wife…just to be knocked off? Come on. To risk sounding like a hopeless romantic, I will not say that Rita will be back. If you remember from the end of season 3, Dexter’s bandaged hand began to bleed on the white wedding dress of Rita while they danced at their reception. That was a classic piece of irony, contrast, and possibly even foreshadow of Rita’s eventual death. So if Rita really did die, the end scene of Season 3 was a great tribute to the finale of season 4.

We have a bunch of cinics that complain about Rita’s character as annoying, needy, etc. Are you kidding me? She is a woman that became the product of every kind of abuse from not just Paul, but her mother. And not only that, we all know that there was another man before Paul. Obivoulsy that one didn’t end to well either. Now she has 3 kids, and finally a shot at what a good life should bring. Excuse her for being so “needy”. She damn well deserves it. Yes, this is a TV show based on a series of novels. I am keeping this in context. But if you want to continue the story, the whole point is not to just have some super-hero serial killer. How his character developed because of the anchor of Rita, and the inspiration of children, that was the point. There are too many loose ends that need to be tied up; both symbolic and narrative. I hope season 5 is not just the same cliche of a new serial killer coming to town that Dexter defeats for the 5th season in a row. The story deserves to see him develop more than that.

DEEDZ…. You obvisously weren’t paying attention to the season Finale.. There is more then 1 D Morgan in all of Miami you douche.. Rita came home to get her ID… Why would the cab wait for her outside after she said shes getting the late flight? There was no cab waiting you douche. The pattern of Ritas death means nothing… especially since he never killed a 10 year old kid either. John Lithgow said Ritas throat was cut in a interview not her leg.

Mark…Wow I love it when people have nothing better to do than to put down people, and call them names on comment boards like this. Each is entitled to their own opinion. Do you know how ridiculous you sound even typing douche so many times in such a short paragraph, such intelligence.

Anyways, I was paying perfectly fine attention to my favorite show. If your claim is about there being more than one D.Morgan than it still doesn’t make it more believable that Trinity would have found the exact two only ones related to Dex out of all Miami as you say. But, it is a TV show so whatever. I’m glad you’ve cleared so much up, like you were right there with Rita about the cab and all. It was just a thought…

  188. Timzy | Apr 2, 2010 | Reply

Mark…Trinity never killed a 10 year old before? Did you even listen to the last few episodes. A 10 year old boy was found missing in EVERY city that the bath tub killing, suicide, and bludgeoning occured. That means he killed 10 year old boys in every city he visited. And from what was revealed by Dexter finding Trinity with the boy at the 4 walls build, he probably placed a boy in the cement of every other site as well. Just thought I should clear that up. And another thing, what is with the language? There have been some highly intelligent comments on this board, only to be marred by people that think it’s appropriate to drown every sentence with expletives. Grow up. “Foul language is only the feeble attempt of an uneducated mind, trying to express itself.” Food for thought.

I just think there was too much time devoted to Batista and LaGuerta (and their affair turned marriage) I was sorta wanted there to be more closure with Batista and his ex (the other vice detecive) Instead, there could have been another sub-plot added so Dexter would have someone else to kill. Kudos on the female cop turned family killer…nice touch.

  192. Rick | Apr 4, 2010 | Reply

My interpretations of the show:Technically Dexter has no rights to Astor nor Cody. Those are not his kids and he did not adopt them so I assume they will go with their grandparents and Dexter will get custody of Harrison if not it could allow Rita’s mother to care for all three with help from Dexter. I see no reason to why there needs to be an explanation for the Trinity Killer killing Rita. First off it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t fit the profile. The Trinity Killer is a murderer. Yes it is true that it was not his profile but he never started it over since Dexter saved the 10 yr old boy from being missing. That in turn would make Rita’s death a motive for Arthur to pay back Dexter. Killing Kyle Butler was not his profile either, however, he killed to protect himself and his profile.
Deedz – 1) Dexter could have been followed by Arthur. He already followed him once to find his work place. 2) Your assuming a cab stayed. But Rita was taking a later flight and her intentions might have been to take another cab later. 3) Arthur was going to kill Dexter since it was his only loose end. As I already mentioned he is a murderer so killing Rita might have been an added bonus to him since Dexter was not home and she was. 4) The original scene of Rita’s death was not blurred but after that it jumped back in forth between the now and his thoughts back to him being born in blood like Harrison.
Mark – If you look at her neck in the last scene it is not cut so you can only assume that it was her leg and was done by the Trinity Killer.
Griffin – You make good sense about Trinity being the killer to Rita. “It’s already too late” comment was my thoughts to on something bad happening that Trinity would get the last laugh. Even Dexter had a perplexed look on his face to trying to figure it out.
mm17/Jack – I don’t take Harrison sitting in the blood as a direct jab at Dexter’s beginning. To me this is a shot at Dexter’s current life and being born in blood like Harry has said all along. Thinking that he could change who he was. He can’t be a family man and protect his family and also be the dark passenger. I do agree that Quinn will play a bigger role in the next season but not sure I would pass him off as a killer.
Phillie – Actually no I don’t see. The last scene with his son has him saying someone stole something from me and his son was trying to convince his mother to leave now because Arthur was in trouble and insane.
Edwin/Sarah – Dexter was not behind Arthur the whole time. You only assume that Arthur was too consumed on fleeing and did not have time to kill Rita. Dexter lost Arthur from the time Arthur woke up in his van until he started following him from the body shop. I don’t see Elliot being a viable.
Fische/Jammers – Deb and Dexter are not related by blood. Incest could not happen. They do not have the same father. In Series 1 Dexter’s real father died at the hands of his real brother. Dexter’s real mother was sleeping with Harry. Harry adopted Dexter and has a daughter of his own, Deb. Deb’s mother died when she was in her teens.
Jack – Didn’t catch any name change for Lithgow but I saw references by others about it as well. Anyone enlighten me on this subject because I did not catch a name change.

Right up until the end I was more and more confident that Dexter, through Rita and the kids, would overcome his past and get rid of his dark passenger eventually. In fact, I thought that was a point of the story – that people can change given the right circumstances. The murder of Rita doesn’t preclude that, but Dexter is now missing someone who obviously was very important to him and the altering motivator is now gone.

It was a good ending for a show, in the sense that strong endings evoke emotions and makes you think about things. Bad ending for Dexter and the kids though. And seeing the baby boy Harrison sitting in darkness in a pool of blood, just got to me. I think I’ll go to bed, think about my own little boy and girl and what I have and that life is precious.

Emotional ending. I’ll await season 5.

If Dexter does not face his role in Rita’s death, then the series will lose its meaning. Like Hamlet, who was also accompanied and advised by the ghost of his father, Dexter had trouble killing a man who was a father figure to him. He did not advise Rita not to come back for any reason. He has learned that his sainted Dad abandoned Dex’s brother in the pool of blood. He has unconsciously contrived to repeat his childhood story, which now curses his own son, and Rita’s children – who may know someday Dexter’s role in killing both their parents.

Dexter is the best show on TV right now. My wife told me about this when she watched an episode while traveling; we’ve been hooked ever since. I just read through all the messages here and I have to say I think the writers accomplished what they wanted to. They got US all thinking and waiting for the next season.

I think that Rita’s death is a double edged sword that will cut both ways. Yes Dexter won’t have to make up excuse after excuse to his wife, but he will have to care for Harrison. Cody and Astor will most likely live with either Rita’s mom (That would be a horrible punishment) or Dex will have to adopt them.

I know that John Lithgow (played an excellent character) said in the post interview that is was Trinity who killed Rita but Harrison sitting in the blood much like younger Dex does make one wonder. While Quinn is a scheming weasel I don’t like him for Rita’s murder. Eliot is not the man either, he wanted Rita for himself. If anything I would expect Eliot to go direct against Dexter.

Season 5 is going to interesting in how the tie up the loose ends with Arthur’s family seeing Dexter in his “dark passenger” mode (Thanksgiving)and how Dex will deal with his new single parent role. I’m not going to sit here and try to predict where season 5 will go as the end of season 4 was totally unexpected but I think that Rita’s death will snap Dexter back in the a new very strict following of the Code.

Just can’t understand why they are waiting until Sept to release season 5. Fall ratings have something to do with that would be my best guess. Until then I guess like the rest of us I’ll be Darkly Dreaming Dexter.

    - Peace out.

Finally finished watching Dexter last night and i have to admit it is one of the most amazing shows i have seen! It really gets you addicted and wanting more. I was very sad that rita died(if she did) but i guess it does make sense because towards the end it seemed like dexter was running out of excuses about work and maybe would have led him to be caught. so for anyone else who is sad about rita just look at it this way: it probably made another season of dexter possible with tons more exciting twists and turns to come! yay

Personally, I was getting tired of Rita’s increasingly whiny and demanding attitude. Still, I didn’t want to see her dead. I’d like to see Deb kick somebody’s butt!

I watched an interview with the actress who plays Rita. She stated that her murder was not a dream sequence and that the murderer was indeed Trinity. It was on youtube.

How’s about this one, it’s all a dream and Dexter wakes up in the plane from the nightmare and starts planning a kill while on vacation with Rita and Harrison

  211. Alice | Apr 18, 2010 | Reply

So here is one my thought. Now we all know that the trinity killer started off with killing a 10 yr old boy, which he attempted to do. Dexter was able to stop him. Killing the 10 year old was the start of his killings with the next being a girl in the bath tub. So will the police think that this was just part of his cycle?

I love this show and I look forward to many more seasons. I can’t get enough.

Word has it that we are instore for a big name actor to come on the scene in Dexter(season 5). Production is underway now and rumors are everywhere. I have even heard that Robin Williams will be the bad guy this season. We will just have to wait and see.

Robin williams??? Really?? he would completely detroy the show. he is one of the most annoying actors out there. All the writers need to do is watch..what was it?? one hour photo, and realize that he would s$$$ for the part of the bad guy.

As for season 4, I was sad to see Rita go, but I can’t wait to see where it will take him!!! So far, I have absolutely loved the show.

I did Not expect Rita’s death. However, I think it was the best twist yet. Now, Rita’s mom is probably going to try for custody of Ester and Cody, Dexter is going to be raising Harrison by himself and who’s to say Rita won’t make some sort of Ghost Appearance. This next season is going to be a MUST SEE. It will be interesting to see how Harrison grows up.

Will he be like Dexter or was he too young to be as drastically affected as Daddy was by Laura’s death???

I say this show is going to be around for years yet. GO DEXTER!

C’mon people! Killing Rita was supposed to break our hearts. That’s why the writers did it. She was Dexter’s hope for a “normal” life and he was kind of getting there. At least that’s what he said he wanted. I personally was shocked by her death. Now anything is possible.

Is this really how shallowly this show is taken? Did anyone read their Shakespeare in high school? Dexter’s dad is the Hamlet-complex, haunting father figure–yes it’s psychological, manifested supernaturally-that’s good drama–Dexter’s inner struggle is given a dialogue. The only way this show can end is with Dexter’s suicide: he must kill the monster. However, by removing Rita, Dexter’s responsibility to ensure that Harry’s legacy is broken is solidified. While Dexter’s passenger may be more angered by Rita’s (and consequently his happy future’s) death, this is Dexter’s chance to become a fully ennobled character. First, he saves Debra (simplest kind, saves her life physically); then Rita (more complex, saves her from her own bad choices in husbands); then Camilla (more complex, show’s her mercy); now he must save his and Rita’s children, and to do so he must kill the dark passenger (Harry’s legacy) and then himself.

I am upset too, i just watched the end of season 4 and I feel cheated. Why did the writers go to that extreme? Dexter’s life has to start over again with the same scenerio as his childhood? really?? They could have expanded the struggle of Dexter and Rita to have a normal life. I wasn’t tired of that storyline, was anyone? Rita posed a challenge to Dexter to develop feelings, and he was slowly doing so in recognizing his relevance to his family: his son and Rita’s kids. Ugh, how much can one person take anyway? First Dexter’s mom is hacked up in front of him, his adopted father commits suicide (because of him), he is forced to kill his homicidal maniac brother, and now his wife is murdered by a hideous killer? Geez, I know I am watching a drama but season 4 ending was over-the-top.

  229. Jon | May 3, 2010 | Reply

The next season will be absolutely groundbreaking. The death of Dexter’s wife is a cornerstone in the plot of his life. He’s now turned into his old self only with more inner fire and rage, that bloodthirsty monster that only gets off on death and killing. That’s the Dexter we all know and love. Michael C Hall, the actor who portrays Dexter, lost all of his hair to chemotherapy for his dormant cancer episode – so we can expect to see an altered different Dexter – a crazed, hairless lunatic hungry for justice. Rita was Dexter’s only true liferaft. The writers are testing us as viewers to weigh our options in terms of what we’d like to see. Would you rather have good ol’ Dexter, family man, husband, father to 3 children and kills people sometimes – or Dexter the recently spoused lunatic with bloodlust and a long laundry list of criminals that need killing? I’m glad his family is out of the picture now. We can finally focus in on who he truly is, and what the darker side of Dexter is really like.

Seems to me like a lot of commenters here are missing the major theme running through all 4 seasons of Dexter: his search for human connection, which drew him to Rudy, Lila and Miguel (in the doomed hope of a truly honest relationship with a brother/lover/friend), and which makes his family bonds strong with Deb, Rita, and the kids despite having to hide his identity from them (and even though he originally thought of Rita as merely cover).

The show isn’t about a righteous vigilante who mows down bad guys. It’s about a lost soul striving to find his humanity. (A very smart and deadly lost soul…) So the loss of Rita isn’t about “freeing him up” to pursue his victims. It’s a gigantic setback in his quest for human connection.

While at times I did fine Rita annoying, with Dexter suddenly a single parent of three kids, he will not have more time to do what he needs to do. He will have less time as he will now be the only parent and responsible for every aspect of kids’ lives. With this ending, I can’t even begin to see a direction the show can take in order to make any sort of sense. Not unless they have him give up all three kids. Which will be really annoying from a viewers perspective after the show spent so many season’s building in a particular direction.

My husband was so upset by the ending he wont watch it again either, we had a shouting match about it.

I love the show, sorry to see the character of Rita die in such a horrid way and for his small baby to be born of blood the way Dexter was but cmon’…..its DEXTER. What did you think would happen!

The death of Rita was so upsetting for me and my daughter; we both said we won’t watch it again. But then after reading alot of these postings we have hope that maybe, just maybe, Rita will be back and that her horrible murder was just a bad nightmare Dexter had. We hope that is the case; she can’t be dead. I hope season 5′s script isn’t set in stone yet and if enough of us complain about them killing Rita off; they’ll find a way to let her back in. That would make us happy. This is one of the best series; probably “the” best I’ve ever seen.

Everyone was surprised by Rita’s demise, that’s what makes this show GREAT! they had us all wrapped up looking to see if Dex was going to be able to get Trinity and caught us off-guard to something that was obviously imminent. There are sacrifices to be made in order to bring out the emotions of the viewer.

  268. david | Jun 2, 2010 | Reply

well Dexter has no real emotions. He is cut off from them.. So this would be interesting to see him try to act out the lose of his wife. A part of him was in love with her.

So now i think the code will change a bit out of confusion with his emotions he will start killing at random and he fights with himself to gain control and keep his old code. But he gets sloppy and then a new comer someone just like him but a female would get him back on track.

And her story would be and should be the same people that killed Dexter mother is the same ones that killed this new girl parents and for her it was revenge… until she got caught by who else. Dexter Father. Then teachers her the code secertly before he dies. and there should be flash backs of Dexter meeting her as a child. And he feels a connection some how with her… DAMM i have alot of ideas…. so i hope the writers would consider taking me in for some good ideas… see im just like Dexter LOL j/k… but dont u wish u could be….

Some things the showrunners have confirmed.

Rita is dead. It was not a dream, she won’t be appearing in visions like Harry. She’s going to be in the premiere, probably in a flashback or something.

There will be no Big Bad this season.

Dexter and Deb will be raising the three kids, in Dexter’s old apartment.

That gay thing from earlier? I saw a clip of M.C. Hall kissing a dude in a club that was trying to give him drugs. Willing to bet he’s playing along to get the chance to kill his target.

A pissed off Dexter who`s unable to extract revenge by killing Trinity over again, what a wild concept, bring it on writers. Sept. 26th is way toooooo long to wait. Yeah, go Dex !

I think aliens killed Rita. Rita was a top secret vulcan agent meant to discover the intense pattern of mitocondrial DNA. The Klingon assassin pulled a Harry to pin the murder on him. Ever since the Kennedy administration, relations between the klingon empire and USA have been stretched.

Expect Barack Obama to guest star in Dexter 5: Dexter does Dallas!

I have never laughed as hard in my life when I read these postings…These comments are better than a comedy show! Remember some of these postings could be from kids which is why some of the facts are off! OMGoodness my stomach hurts!

I thought the finale’ was AWESOME and I was so shocked! Great ending to a brilliant season. Dexter almost got caught on many occasions which put me on the edge of my seat. The writers are going to have to be creative to get Dexter out of this mess; there will be a lot of explaining and eyebrow raising reasons why things happened. No doubt Dexter’s subconscious father will continue to mentor him even from the grave. I can’t explain the excitement when in the last episode Dexter entered his house on his cell phone calling his precious (but annoying cry baby) wife only to hear her cell phone ringing in the house! WOW what a rush! Talk about unexpected!

I agree with Gerard Gordon-Toylor on almost every thing. The only thing I disagree with is about Rita. I never understood why no on liked her. I thought that she was one of the realest characters on the show. She showed how difficult it was being married to a workaholic and having three kids. She took care of them, day to day, and dealt with a distant husband. Anyone else in her position would have done what she did, or worse. She could have had an affair with her neighbor, but realized that she loved Dexter too much to hurt him like that. A weaker person would have succumbed. She loved him did what she thought was right. I’m not saying that they should have killed her because I thought that it was a great twist, but I really hate the Rita-bashing.

Remember people everyone is entitled to an opinion, no need to post insults!!

Seriously man, this isn’t LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, fine by me that you don’t have showtime anymore so go watch american idol or glee MATT and let the others enjoy the show. First off Rita was annoying beyond belief and she almost ruined the series for me with her soft hypocritcal voice and constant nact for trying to create problems that weren’t there and the frustrating way she would always butt in with his personal life, like being a homocide detective isn’t enough to keep your mind busy. Anyways I cannot wait to see how SEASON 5 will play out because Dexter works better with nothing holding him back. And the person named SARAH on here, rock on babe, I second you

What do they mean he’ll have a lot of time on his hands? He will have his two step kids and his son Harrison to take care of because, since their mom is now gone Dexter will have to take on both parental roles. First off several of Trinity’s victims had kids so someones comment doesnt make sense Rita could still be dead.

Also if Rita is dead some questions need to be asked

    1. How did Arthur find Dexter’s home he looked up his address and that led him to his apartment where Deb now lives.

    2. How did Arthur get to Dexters new residence even if he did find said address as he picked up the mustang on foot seems odd that he got to all these places, Debs apartment Dexters house and killed Rita and the body shop in the time it took Dexter to drive from Arthurs residence to the body shop where the mustang was

    3. why was there some blurryness as they showed Harrison sitting in the pool of blood and as Dexter walked away with him

    4. When/How did Authur kill Rita as she rode in a taxi to the airport she must have returned in a taxi and as she was just getting her ID dont you think she would have kept the taxi waiting and surely he wouldnt have left without being paid.

Several things dont add up they will have some explaining to do in season 5 can’t wait and it was definately a twist I wasn’t expecting.

Trinity didn’t kill Rita. The MO is diferent, she was not pointing at anything and the kid was sitting in his mothers blood(Like Dexter), the writers are introducing a new character, someone connected to Dexters past, that neighbor Elliot is suspicios to me, I don’t know why.So Ritas death in the bathtub is a distraction, it is something for the cops, the real message is the kid sitting in his mothers blood, that is the message for Dexter, i think.

Its a great move killing off rita..She was annoying and it was getting complicated..She is a secondary character to me (not needed)the writers made the right choice doing that.I
will continue to watch DEXTER no matter who they kill off as long as its not deb or him (of course)

I agree that killing off Rita was a good thing. he was an annoying whiner. For those who left because Rita got killed off by Trinity (or did she?) all I can say is adios, don’t let the door hit you in the arse. Can’t wait for next season.

If Rita did not get killed and it’s some sort of dream sequence, then that is just plain lazy writing. She’s dead, plain and simple if it is anything else I will never watch the show again. I’m a huge fan since the beginning but this show should have ended by now. Quit while your ahead! Don’t ruin a great thing. But they will. 2 words, greed money!

I love all the people who are like “Omg! I am pissed that they killed Rita, I hate this show! emoragequit!”

Ok. Fact. This is not your show. You are not a writer for this show. You are not a producer for this show. This is not your art (as long as you view film as art, Movie or otherwise).

Next time, you should get in contact with those that make your new favorite TV show, so they will write it and produce it exactly the way you want it to be, so that you can have a super cheery day, drinking your wine coolers, listening to pop music, driving your SUV, parking in your garage at your two-story house that is identical to those around your house, finally to plop down on the couch to watch the TV show that supports the utopic vision that you are suffering from.

Wake up, smell the french press, hop on the real-world boat and grab a “Slice of Life”.

Hey…i love Dexter as much as anyone else.Killing off Rita???Excellent move!Loved Rita like a sister, but i’d rather have a show that keeps me on the edge of my seat, than boring me to death by trying to keep it mundane.
    I can’t believe that every year,it gets better & better.John Lithgow is a treasure..what talent!
I hope they can pull it off again this year.BRAVO,Showtime!

    love love love Sasho’s comment!
i’m starting to think that it wasn’t trinity because she wasn’t pointing to anything and there just wouldn’t have been enough time for him to do it. i don’t know if it was anyone that we already know though… i definitely think its someone new.
the season 5 premiere is almost here!!!!!!!!!! can’t wait!

I’m agree with Sasho… I think Rita was killed by Elliot, not by Trinity (remember 4th season finale, Trinity didn’t mention to Dexter Rita’s murder!).
I’m from Italy, how much I will wait for 5th season!!

I vote for Lila as Rita’s killer.

I just watched the season 4 finale, and I (like many others) am furious with the ending. I have no intrest to watch the season 5 premire this sunday, which is a really upsetting for me because I’ve been watching Dexer since it first aired. Completely and totally ruined for me…

I also agree with Sasho. The MO doesn’t fit. Trinity started the cycle off with killing a young boy first. he is a creature of ritual. Also Trinity always was in the bathtub with the lady in order to kill her. He would seduce them first and get them to the romantic moment. I doubt Rita would have fallen for that from him.

Instead my theory is one where Dexter is being hunted and he has not realized it yet. This new killer knows about Dexter, and knew enough about Trinity’s standard modus operandum. I am going to reference this new killer as Stalker. Stalker left a message for Dexter, by having his son sitting in Rita’s blood. Stalker was able to get close to Rita, as there was no signs of a struggle or a break in (that we currently know about). Dexter would have seen that when entering the house. I am also thinking that Stalker is out for revenge against Dexter, and what better way to start than by killing those he loves, one at a time? Rita’s murder now casts suspicion onto Dexter, and he cant explain where we has during that time. Stalker is wanting Dexter’s world to crumble. First by grief, and then exposing him to the world for what he is. And right now I am thinking that Stalker is Elliot. He seduced Rita, and then took it from there.

It is here today is the day we will get to find out the direction the show is gonna take i have been thinking about today for a month lol I dont think it was trinity that killed Rita either this season will be great just like the others

Danielle, get over it, it’s a t.v. show. Like several posts above I agree in thinking it was a great move to open up avenues for the show to follow. The old dexter…husband, dad, blood guy, serial killer… they hit the max with that, there really was nowhere else to go with it. I was upset as well, but it had to happen. I was a little disappointed at how this season started, but I have a feeling it’s going to move quickly now!! I like the “stalker” theory that was put forth by Don!! I think Elliot will be suspect for most of the season, but not sure he’s the one!! Can’t wait for Sunday at 8 P.M.!!!!

amy the show does not take after the books read the books and u will know what im talking about the show is based off the books.

born in blood his son born in blood it could be that someone from his past knows about him and killed rita and had harrison sitting in his mothers blood we’ll c the writers of this show have this work out my guess is all of us true dexter fans will love it…………..and hopefully they dont keep the show going to long, shows that are on to long seem to have bad endings i say go out on top and be known as the best show ever.

I liked the way last season ended because writers aren’t supposed to do stuff like that!!! I like it in the way that I liked Jack Bauer’s wife getting killed in the first season of 24…you’re not supposed to kill innocent people! I like that it’s not all clean, nicely packaged and socially responsible (if you can even do that with a serial killer theme!) Apart from that, I agree with Gerard Gordon-Toylor (above) that Rita was annoying, needy… I didn’t like her role as a wife even if Dexter weren’t a serial killer… “Dexter drop everything you are doing now because I have just called you to say the baby is fussy and that should be your entire life’s priority…” I am glad she is gone. Creates wonderful possibilities!

Anyone else think Quinn is going to meet an untimely end like Dokes did in season 2??? He’s going to get too close for Dexters comfort.

trinity kills in 3 remember a little boy is always one of the victims

  403. Ryan | Oct 12, 2010 | Reply

the boy was first, then I think it was the bathtub woman, then the woman “falling”. Rita was totally not trinity’s doing!! But the question still remains….WHO??? Episode 3 was a little better, it’s starting to pick up!!

  404. Sabrina | Oct 17, 2010 | Reply

Trinity actually kills in 4: first the little boy, five days later after the boy is kidnapped a mother of two gets killed in a bathtub, then we have the “jumper” who is always a woman, and at the end it’s the Dad who gets killed. The reason why they call him Trinity is because Frank Lundy didn’t take notice of the lost boys cause they never found their bodies, so he assumed that it was only three kills and therefore the name “Trinity”.

I wonder if Rita was Trinity’s doing at all too!
