“crazy religious mother”? I happen to love this show but am also a Christian, and in no way do I think her character is ‘crazy’, she is just spiritual and is firm in her beliefs… I suppose everyone is entitled to his/her opinion though… One thing I don’t like about the show is that it portrays religion as absolutely sophomoric and ridiculous. I would love to see the writers be more gentle toward the God-loving and God-fearing viewers who love this show. *bracing for the impact of people who are going to slam this comment*

Sheldon’s mother is portrayed that way because she is a crazy Christian. Beating someone with a Bible when they don’t eat their brussel sprouts is “crazy”. Statistically speaking a majority of the scientific community believe in evolution as the origin of man as Sheldons mother does not(she repeatedly mentions this). Stereotypes are ramped up for comedic relief on both ends of the spectrum for sure, but they are not entirely inaccurate.

Michael, I agree with your sentiments about the show’s portrayal of religious people entirely. Mary, Sheldon’s mother does not beat anyone over the head with a Bible and certainly not because they didn’t eat Brussel sprouts…
